"In the initial concept meetings we had discussed a civil rights series which was based on an MLK painting I had previously created. We thought to expand on the idea using four iconic figures of the civil rights movement but by using different means to get the same results. This is where the title 'War and Peace' came from. On the peace side were Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks and on the war side were Malcolm X and Angela Davis.

To further push the concept I based the compositions on The Black Panther Party posters of the 1960’s and 70’s. Using familiar scenes of protest, important slogans and iconic images I created compositions that were more of a narrative of the movement than a single image which was representative of my work."
