Anna Mary Robertson "Grandma" Moses (1860-1961) began painting seriously at age 76 after arthritis made embroidery too difficult. Despite no formal training, she became one of America's most famous folk artists, known for her nostalgic rural scenes depicting farm life in upstate New York and New England. Her primitive style, bright colors, and detailed landscapes captured public imagination during the post-war era. Her works appeared on greeting cards, tiles, and fabrics, making her art accessible to everyday Americans. She continued painting until her death at 101, creating over 1,500 works. Her success challenged assumptions about age and artistic achievement.
