Al Díaz, a pioneer of New York City Graffiti & Street Culture, co-created the iconic SAMO©...Graffito with high school friend Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1978. Díaz revived SAMO©...In 2016, updating its commentary on current domestic and global issues. He also currently creates anagrams from ‘liberated’ NYC subway signage, blending elements from his graffiti past.
This collection of work honors Al Díaz's childhood in the historic Lower East Side (LES) of 1960s - 70s NYC, creating a vivid understanding of street culture as it was, highlighting the creativity, resilience and adaptability of New Yorkers, particularly the youth of the era, in creating their own unique entertainment and community bond in the ultimate urban environment. |
