“I have always been inspired by the way fashion designers create wearable art. Earlier this year, I was asked to paint a pair of classic Chuck Taylors for an art auction. For years I have worked on canvas and wood panels, and I have created murals. And yet, as I painted those shoes, I could see far beyond the restriction of two-dimensional surfaces. Now I am inspired to explore ways that my art can go further. I see my art in motion, and having my work on clothing, bags, and shoes means it is constantly moving. I love that aspect of fashion design.”
- William Goodman
William Goodman’s artwork reflects his fascination with pop culture and urban decay. His paintings and murals are inspired by street art, advertisements, typography, and illustrations. With a background in abstract painting and graphic design, Goodman’s broad range of influences include Rauschenberg, Basquiat, Warhol, Pollack, David Carson, Hannah Hoch, Alessandro Michele, and Nicola Formichetti.
The layers of Goodman’s paintings reveal his creative process. Each piece of his artwork tells an individual story. He approaches a blank surface with an initial idea, experimenting and creating with no restrictions. As his paintings develop, some remain more abstract, while others feature imagery, typography, and collage. Goodman uses a variety of mixed media techniques.
